“La narrativa dice la verità in
un'epoca in cui
le persone cui è demandato di dire
la verità inventano storie.
I politici, i media, coloro che
creano le opinioni, in effetti, inventano storie.
E allora diventa dovere di uno
scrittore cominciare a dire la verità”.
Queste parole sono di Salman
Rushdie. ( fuori campo )
“Narrative tells the truth in an era where people who is
supposed to tell the truth tells stories.
Politicians, media, those who create opinions, in
fact, tell stories.
That’s why it has become a duty for a writer to start
telling the truth”.
There words are by Salman Rushdie.
che uniscono eventi e realtà apparentemente separati e lontani.
In order to tell the truth we have to
try and understand, and we have to remember.
In order to understand intelligence is
required, that means fantasy that can discover links that join events and
realities which are apparently far and separate.
But in order to understand, intelligence
alone is not enough.
Sensitivity is needed as well.
Sensitivity is that quality that allows
to distinguish what is valuable and what is less valuable or has no value at
all.
Dopo aver capito, ricordare è
necessario.
Ricordare
After understanding, you need to
remember.
You need to remember in order not to
commit again mistakes and injustices.
Memory is therefore a revolutionary act.
Coltivare
l’intelligenza, la sensibilità, la memoria richiede onestà.
L’onestà richiede sacrificio.
Nurturing intelligence, sensitivity,
memory requires honesty.
Honesty requires sacrifice.
Il
sacrificio porta spesso dolore.
Molti
non voler vedere; di non voler sentire;
Sacrifice often brings pain.
Many people don’t want to suffer and
therefore they are dedicated to the practice of nurturing oblivion.
Io
I wish to try and understand how it was
possible that we became what we are:
People who don’t want to see, who don’t
want to know, who don’t want to understand.
dell’oblio. Non voglio dimenticare
La chiamerò semplicemente A.
( fine del prologo )
I am facing my computer since a few days
and I am trying to put in order the chaos in which I find myself since a
morning of some weeks ago.
I want to resist to the temptation of
oblivion. I don’t want to forget.
I will just call her A.
Ormai
By now almost anyone talks about her
anymore, as if she had never existed.
But this era is distracted, at the most
some tears, some chats, some compassion.

Nel primo mistero doloroso si
contempla la disperazione di Maria
·
In the first sorrowful mystery we contemplate the desperation of Maria
La
sera prima.
Vicino
The night before.
Near my house, that is next to the station,
traffic is blocked; ambulances and emergency services; cancelled trains… an
accident must have occurred. Tomorrow we shall read on the newspapers.
…Never send to know for whom the bell
tolls; it tolls for thee.
La
mattina dopo.
A
scuola; sono in sala professori. Alcune colleghe, in disparte parlano sotto
voce.
molti ragazzi e ragazze, privi di punti di riferimento adulti, lei è una madre;
Cerca di ricomporsi. Mi avvicino a lei.
“Adesso
è all’ospedale, in coma… è in condizioni disperate… dopo proviamo a telefonare…
The next morning.
At school; I’m in the teachers’ room. Some
colleagues whisper aside. I check the time;
I remove from the closet the books I
need for the lessons.
Maria comes; she throws herself into the
arms of another colleague and bursts into tears; she is devastated from desperation.
“I didn’t’ make it…. I didn’t make it…”, she repeats holding with strength a
napkin on her face.
Maria is a colleague of mine who, among
other things, deals with law education.
For many boys and girls, who miss adult figures,
she is a mother; she tries to put herself together. I approach her. “What happened?”.
“Don’t you remember about her? I told you…”
“…She said she would take an ice cream
and be right back…. She wore her headphones….she had said it yesterday morning
in school, to her friends… she had told them goodbye… but we didn’t think…
somebody asked something I can’t remember.
“Now she is in hospital, in a coma… She
is in desperate conditions… later we’ll try to call… we’ll ask the headmaster… or
they won’t talk to us…”
“Ti
ricordi?
Do you remember? I told you about her”.
Yes. Memories rise one by one, throughout
the morning… even if I never met A.
Forse
Maybe sometimes I bumped into her in the
school entry, under the big arcade of that monument that has been turned into a
high school institution, but she wasn’t among my students, and nobody ever
introduced her to me.
·
Nel secondo mistero doloroso
si contempla la testimonianza di una madre
·
In the second sorrowful mystery we contemplate the testimony of a mother
(
canzone sulla mafia in dialetto siciliano)
io
e Maria chiacchieriamo.
in ospedale. Ora madre a
Mi
parla di A; una ragazza ospite in una casa di accoglienza. Adesso ha 17 anni;
quando ne aveva 7 o 8, il padre era
morto.
I chat with Maria. She follows some
girls who have been taken away from their families.
She tells me “in this Italy, in this
town, things that you can’t imagine happen!”
She tells me about a two year old girl;
one week before the mother took her to hospital. It seems that her father has
brutally abused her. Now mother and child have transferred from the city and
the father has been arrested.
She tells me about A; a girl who is
hosted in a children’s home. Now she is 17; when she was 7 or 8, the father
died.
A,
morto.
Due
anni prima, alcuni insegnanti avevano percepito il disagio.
A, her mother and her younger brother
were left alone.
Her father’s brother had got in the
family and he replaced his dead brother.
Two years later, some teachers had perceived
the disadvantage.
Avrebbe dovuto sottoporsi
a una plastica.
A used to cut herself… she would
continuously hurt her groin as if she wanted to remove her sex.
As she continuously cut herself, she had a hard and callous scar that would
continuously break and never heal. She would have to undergo plastic surgery.
La
L’uomo negava. La madre negava. I
referti medici confermavano.
The psychologist from school was able to
let her talk. A said that her uncle had been abusing her for ten years, since
he had joined her family.
The man denied. Her mother denied. Medical reports confirmed.
processo.
“Staremo
a vedere” conclude, Maria.
Devo
The girl and her brother had been taken
away from the family; the man had been convicted.
“we shall see” Maria concludes.
I have to say I don’t know about which
relationships, which contiguity existed between this family and organized
crime; we didn’t touch this topic.
La
mattina è finalmente passata !
Esco
The morning has finally passed!
I get out from school; in the bookstall
I see the local news’ big titles: hit by a train, a 17 year old girl seriously

A 17 year old student….. was hit
yesterday around 7 p.m. from a train of the PQ railway, she was admitted in
extremely serious conditions yesterday in the Y hospital, in intensive care
unit. The accident occurred between the railroad crossing in R way and the one
in S way at about 200 meters from the railway station.
The causes of
the collision aren’t clear yet. Police station is doing assessments. Even local
police and fire fighters are on the place. So far the in charge of the
investigations won’t exclude any hypothesis: from an accident to an attempt of
crossing the railway (the girl was wearing headphones) to a possible voluntary
gesture. The train involved is the regional 123: it was coming from P and was
slowing down in order to reach the station. According to a first
reconstruction… the girl was seen lying on the rails, the body was parallel to
the rails: the machinist tried to stop in all ways.
della Croce Azzurra e trasferita all’ospedale ...
treni soppressi.
The girl was hit
on her head. 118 was called immediately… the rescue operators were forced to
leave their means in R way and walk for a hundred meters on the roadbed in
order to reach the 17 year old girl, pulled out from under the train by a 118
doctor. They started a long and intense reanimation maneuver, then the student
has been taken on the Red Cross ambulance and transferred to hospital…
The railway
traffic… was held for two hours, till 9 p.m.: four trains have been cancelled.
bianco e azzurro, fermo.
In the photo next to the article, a few men wearing
black jackets and helmets (maybe the fire fighters) with other men wearing
fluorescent red and yellow jackets are carrying a stretcher along the rails,
bordering a white and blue still train.
Tranquilli.
farmacologicamente?...”. All’ospedale
dicono di non continuare a chiamare continuamente. “La situazione è
gravissima”.
Maria organizza qualche momento di preghiera.
This is information. Where the accident occurred; how;
when.
The fire fighters, local police and first aid workers did
what they had to do and after a couple of hours, everything started working the
way it has to. Everybody’s calm. As if nothing had occurred.
The afternoon is spent hoping and waiting. Some phone
calls; maybe the situation isn’t serious the way it seems. “…but is the coma
real or was it pharmacologically induced?...”. From the hospital they request to
stop calling continuously. “The situation is very serious”.
Maria organizes some moments of prayers.
While I correct some tests, I try to rebuild the puzzle.
“She used to cut herself, she used to hurt her groin, as if she wanted to
remove her sex”.
Maybe A used to hurt herself to try and stop her uncle from taking intercourse
with her.
People talks a lot, and rightly, about femicide. Women killed by men….Fine;
but we should include as well in our thinking, in our calculations, those women
who are induced to hurt themselves on their own because of despair,
because they lack a way out.

In realtà l’autopsia viene eseguita dieci giorni dopo.
The next day, the last article.
After this article about A the silence from the press becomes
permanent. Why such shame? Why all this silence? Because of the privacy law? What if this law was just
a comfortable alibi?
What if this reticence was hiding the will of the press not to compromise
itself…
Avoiding to be involved in order not to risk
complaints, issues…
Actually the autopsy was done ten days later.
·
Nel terzo mistero doloroso si contemplano i
pensieri cattivi della notte nell’attesa dell’autopsia
·
In
the third sorrowful mystery we contemplate the bad thoughts of the night
waiting for the autopsy
Tuttavia ho sofferto. Ho sofferto soprattutto di notte.
Ho sofferto e ho fatto pensieri
cattivi.
I don’t doubt that the judge, the authorities intended
to clear up any uncertainty; I don’t doubt they wanted to clarify all aspects
of the incident.
However I suffered. I suffered especially at night.
I suffered and I had bad thoughts.
I wondered…. Why would an adult man copulate again and
again with a child… for years? For pleasure?... It doesn’t seem possible to me!
Perhaps to devastate any dignity in her, any future
hope… perhaps that was the only way to make her a slave and sell her… and how
is it possible that her mother would allow that?
I
suoi figli…?
I am aware of course that she wouldn’t
be the first woman to be reduced to slavery and sold.
What vision of the world do this woman
and this man have?... Willing to destroy a child for their own survival.
And still: what kind of society is not
able to protect its weakest individuals…?
Its children…? What are the real
priorities, in our society?
E perché ora, l’autopsia;
un ulteriore strazio del corpo. Per sapere cosa?
Cosa
cercavano i medici e i giudici nelle sue viscere…?
Volevano
sapere se la ragazza era incinta?
Sarebbe
in famiglia.
And why now, the autopsy; another
torment of the body. To find out what?
What were the doctors and judges looking
for in her bowels…?
Did they want to find out whether the
girl was pregnant?
It would have been a great loss of
credibility for a girl who claimed to be raped in her family.
Volevano
sapere se faceva uso di droghe?
Forse
Did they want to know whether she was a
drug addict?
Maybe somebody would be pleased if she
had killed herself under the effect of substances that change the perception of
reality.
Did they want to know whether she was
HIV positive? If there was an “other” motivation to kill herself?
Why do they want to find the truth only
now? What truth are they hoping to find?
A
Her unburied body, like the one of
suicidal Antigone in the quarry, was anguishing me and wouldn’t let me sleep.
It is to the memory of Antigone I
decided to call her A.
And like Antigone who can’t sleep knowing
about her unburied brother’s body and wanders outside the walls of the town
entrusting with Ismene her action plans.
Come
Like Antigone I can’t sleep, knowing
about A’s body lying in the cold room, waiting to be eviscerated from an
autopsy that seems to me justifiable and crazy at the same time…
I have no idea about what to do.
Crushed by absolute helplessness, I can just
write.
Ho
cominciato citando:
“Narrative tells the truth in an era where people who is
supposed to tell the truth tells stories.
Politicians, media, those who create opinions, in
fact, tell stories.
That’s why it has become a duty for a writer to start
telling the truth”.
provare a capire.
I don’t know the truth, but at least I
want to try to understand.
Mi
sessuale borghese.
The case of Violette Noziere comes into my mind, and I
tell myself that the 80s’ have passed in vain.
Violette Nozière: I believe few people
remember her story, even though in the 70s’ a film of a certain interest was
obtained, and before that Breton and Eluard, inspired by her poems and art
works, made of her an heroine; a model of resistance to the family authoritarianism and bourgeois sexual hypocrisy.
In the early 30s’ Violette tried to kill her father
and mother with poison and gas. Her mother survived, but her father died.
Violette declared that her parents deserved it; she accused her father of
abusing her since the age of twelve, and accused her mother of never
intervening in her defense. The mother throughout the process kept denying her
daughters’ claims.
After a one year trial, Violette was sentenced to
death.
The judges and the public opinion refused to believe
Violette; she was accused of prostitution; of leading an immoral life, and of
attempting to kill her parents in order to take possession of the family
savings.
It made a sensation that at the end of the trial her
mother begged the judges asking for “mercy for my child!”
Death penalty was commuted into life sentence and 12
years of forced works, till in 1945 Violette was finally released.
Afterwards she married an employee of the prison where
she was held, and she had 5 children.
In 1963, three years before she died, she was
completely rehabilitated.
Assassina, mostro, raptus
Now I wonder: what would have happened
if A had killed her uncle, or her mother, or both?
What titles would have dominated on the
news?
Which words would have been used to
speak about her? Murderer, monster, madness…
Would they have referred to other
reports? Who would have been available to listen, to give credit to her
justifications? Who would have committed in supporting self-defense?
I 10 giorni in attesa dell’autopsia
scorrono lentissimi…
Qualcuno
The 10 days waiting for autopsy passed very slowly…
Someone whispers that lately the girl had got close to
a satanic sect… she used to wear black clothes… she used to listen to music by
certain groups…
I don’t know whether it’s true, but if it was there
would be one more reason for regret: it would only mean that A had sent a sign
and the whole world around her hadn’t listened; a sign, a metaphor, an
allegory:
I am in hell… nobody can take me out of here… and then
so be it, I am here!
One morning I meet Maria in the school
hall; she holds a frame with a picture and a blue flowers bouquet:
“… we shall put them on her desk…blue
was her favorite color…”
She shows me the picture in the frame:
“…we enlarged this photo.. it’s the only one showing her face…she didn’t want
to be photographed…moreover she always had a topknot…her hair all over her
face… this picture was taken two months ago… she had a new haircut that was
showing a little her face”.
I look at the picture; A isn’t smiling;
she isn’t looking at the lens; her face is slim, long… I don’t recall ever having seen her before.
Maria walks towards the class with A.’s
mates. Besides the pain they seem almost glad for doing this small gesture for
their friend.
Finalmente la notizia: L’autopsia è
stata fatta.
Penso
no.
Il comune? Eh, no!
No. Il
Comune no!
Finally the news: the autopsy has been
done.
I think this anxiety for the unburied
body is about to end; I wonder when the funeral will be held.
Nobody knows.
First the judge has to question about an
important matter: who is going to pay for the funeral?
Grotesque!
What about her mother? No! Maybe she is not willing to, maybe she
can’t…However her mother said no!
What about the children’s home? The children’s
home is always out of funds… no, it seems unlikely.
What about the city council? Ah, no! Why should the community pay (after all the
inconveniences of the accident) for a private funeral? No. The council not!
The school? Can the school collect the
money? No. It’s not possible! Why? I don’t know…Nobody
knows.
One thing is certain: the school absolutely not!
If it wasn’t a tragedy it would be a
farce.
A,
The judge will decide… in 3,4,6 days…who knows…
Burocracy as new Creonte, keeps the body of A still unburied.
A, like Antigone, dismembered, in the frost of the cold room,
has to wait 3 or 4 more days,
before the sentence of the judge comes.
Finally, the judge decides that the
funeral has to be paid by the council.

In the fourth sorrowful mystery we contemplate the funeral of A
Arrivo
intrecciati.
a me.
I get to the church.
It’s a recently constructed building.
The plant is square, with the altar in the corner.
The room for the believers goes slightly
down.
The light enters through windows in multicolor geometric motifs:
spirals and twisted vortices
I came early therefore I take a tour in
search of a place to settle down.
I pass a sort of chapel that has at its
center a statue of Padre Pio,
I sit in the corner hoping that no one I
know is to sit next to me. I know I'm very emotional and I don’t want to be
seen by the students as I can’t keep myself from crying.
Cominciano
programmi, spiegare, far fare verifiche.
Oggi
le guardo come sono nella loro realtà.
Alcune
I
successo… quel modello televisivo patinato…
Her school mates start to arrive. I look
at them with an attention that I can’t have in school where I have to hold the
class, compile registers, moving forward with the programs, explain, arrange
tests.
I look at them today as they are in
their reality.
Some already have their face swollen
from crying; bloodshot eyes; an astonished gaze.
They are in front of death, something
too big, they don’t understand, they don’t know how to deal with it and it
crushes them.
Almost all of them are too fat, others
are too skinny, others too small.
All of them are clumsy, bundled up in
jackets, in sweatshirts or sweaters.
Their hair ... Most of it doesn’t seem
even combed ... the improbable hairstyles, rough, sloppy ...
All of them are wearing jeans ... full
of holes artificially made by the producers themselves: stupidity that on this
occasion shows itself in all its meaninglessness.
All of them is wearing sneakers, of all
possible brands.
How far is this Italian reality and
poetry that is now here near me, from the representation that is offered.
They are poor girls, destined to be
excluded. They are in the open, defenseless,
real. They
know it; they feel it. Among them, sometimes, when they tease each other, they
put on their forehead three fingers closed and only the index and thumb straight;
in a way that it looks an L: L for looser.
They are those girls who will never even
remotely get close to that model of success ... that glossy television model
... slim-smiling-glamorous-made-up-hair styled ... a living Barbie, with a
soccer player at her side.
For these girls education, a technical
institute, will never be a social elevator.
In the best case it will provide them
the instruments to go through life.
The hope that this school (of which most
of them can’t even understand the sense...) can provide them with tools to understand
the world and to move in it, is not even an illusion.
fiato, senza colore, senza intenzione, biascicandole rapidamente…
Also Maria has come. She puts a
photograph near the altar; like a good housewife, she displays better the
flowers and the crowns; she distributes leaflets to the youths with readings,
thoughts ...
The mass begins: music ... unturned
chords of guitars ... a voice without mercy or grace sings songs about nothing
harmonic ...
Readings are done by the youths who put
the words in a row, without taking a breath, without color, without intention,
quickly mumbled ...
The priest pronounces a speech that
seems taken from a manual:
"We just felt that Christ has conquered death ...
We must interrogate ourselves about her
death ...
…
ma chi era A per lui? Ma dov’è A in queste parole?
Mi
distraggo. ( canzone in inglese di Giusy Caligari )
…but who was A to him? But where is A in these words?
I get distracted.
At the moment of the holy communion,
music (an adage air on the G string, perhaps by Bach), performed by a flute and
a violin, penetrates into the deep of the souls, and many of these girls are
overwhelmed by pain and can no longer hold their tears. I cry.
Everybody shares napkins.
In the first desk, her mother and his
brother (a boy), his uncle and a girl.
Behind the boy there’s an educator, the
"in charge", who keeps him constantly under control.
The brother has moments of despair. He bends on himself, he throws himself
down and his mother holds him.
Fuori,
coraggio a vicenda.
Outside, in the square, the girls seem
to just want to stay huddled in their grief. Swollen eyes, astonished and
wordless looks.
They don’t even feel like meeting and
saying hello.
The closest friends, those from primary
school, those who live in the same street cry desperately and hug each other; they
try to support each other.
presente e in prima fila.
testa…
Maria introduces to me the closest
friend of A.
She is South American; I'll call her Rosa,
like St. Rosa of Lima.
We talk. We have to meet in the coming
days; we have to talk about A.
We have to remember.
What to do? ... What if the same thing was
to happen to another innocent and defenseless creature?
Crying she mumbles something against the
hypocrisy of the neighbors who stand here crying ... "... Everybody knew and nobody did anything."
Going back to school I ask my colleague,
Maria, how is it possible that her uncle was present and in the front row. She
tells me that not only he was present in the church, but he also attended all
the functions of those days: moments of prayer, rosaries ...
Maria tells me that he and her mother don’t
accept any responsibility.
He and his mother claim that the
teenager, perhaps looking for attention, was tainted by protagonism, and had
invented everything.
The hospital reports that confirm
another reality don’t count much.
It’s not up to us to condemn ... but the
fact that the girl is disguised as an unbalanced, a pathological liar, is
really hard to accept.
Betrayed even by her mother. (some
verses by Pasolini come to my mind) ...
I wonder what
mothers did you have…:
mediocre mothers, holding souls where the world is
condemned not to give pain nor joy… mediocre mothers, who never had for you a
loving word,
but a sordidly mute love of a beast…
coward mothers, who have on their face an old fear,
that like a disease deforms the lineaments in a whiteness that fogs and move
them away from the heart …
servile and accomplices mothers, used
for centuries to bend their heads without love ...

In the fifth sorrowful mystery we contemplate the memories of Rosa
Qualche
Mi presento all’appuntamento con emozione e trepidazione…
stava studiando? Quali erano i suoi desideri?
A few days after the funeral, I meet Rosa in the
school hall.
We agree about the time. It is not hard to find a free
hour in which we can meet.
I tell her that I want to
understand.
I show up to the appointment with emotion and
trepidation ... I feel that 'I have to' gather this witness, but I feel that in
this thing there is, at least in part, the risk of a tactless invasion. I show up almost justifying myself... I
say that I would just like to know something more about A ...
Her interests; What she liked what she was studying?
What were her wishes?
classe… tutti 8 e 9…
Il suo desiderio? Voleva andare via…
in America
A far cosa? … avrebbe voluto conoscere i componenti
abbracciata… neanche dalle compagne;
Non sopportava che le toccassero i capelli;
faccia;
Portava camicione lunghe, larghe, grosse per nascondere
le forme, per non essere attraente;
Si sentiva in colpa. Credeva di fare schifo, per
quello che aveva subito;
At school she was very good ... one of the best in her
class ... she was getting 8s and 9s ...
Her wish? She wanted to go away ...
in America
To do what? ... She wanted to know the members of her
favorite band ... but above all she wanted to get out of here ... away from her
family ... her mother ... she had also argued the day before ...
Why? ... Her mother wanted her to come home ... she wanted
her to retract her accusations ... she accused her of ruining the family
(she shakes her head a little) Maybe if she had been
sent to another city ...
I ask her if she really believes that her uncle was
abusing her.
Of course! She tells me
that every night, for years and years, ever since she was a child, A, when she
went to bed, crouched all in a corner, waiting with dread that he arrived ...
He wanted to crush her body ... maybe that was why she
had eating disorders ... she ... was anorexic ... but lately she had recovered
a little '...
What was her weigh? ... 39
kg ...
Did she have a boyfriend? ... She ... lately had a
boy, one of her age, but they rarely saw each other ... he was living in
another city; he was a boy who loved her ... he didn’t touch her ... it was his
way to let her know that not all men are disgusting ...
She couldn’t bear to be touched ... kissed ... ...
even embraced by her companions;
She couldn’t stand that someone touched her hair;
she always had a pony tail and a forelock that covered
half of her face;
she used to wear long, broad, thick shirts to hide her
forms, in order not to be attractive;
she felt guilty. She believed to suck, for what she
had gone through;
I comment: ... she certainly felt she had been reduced
to a thing ...
She felt she had suffered one of those humiliations
that are forever,
she felt that her dignity had been denied ...
trivial and mediocre are the executioners of A. Rosa
nods her head.
